Could Have Missed the Pain inspired by...

The Dance
Lyrics by: Tony Arata
Album: Garth Brooks - Garth Brooks

Looking back on the memory of
The dance we shared 'neath the stars above
For a moment all the world was right
How could I have known, that you'd ever say goodbye

Chorus:
And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd have had to miss the dance

Holding you I held everything
For a moment wasn't I a king
But if I'd only known how the King would fall
Hey who's to say you know I might have changed it all

Repeat Chorus

Yes my life is better left to chance
I could have missed the pain but I'd have had to miss the dance

Notes:

This is probably one of my all time favorite songs. When I thought of writing a story to get Jason to realize what he'd had with Elizabeth and didn't have anymore, I thought that the best way to reach that realization would be by ripping it all away from him by her death. And the song that immediately came to mind about a love lost was this one. I tried to bring Jason to the point that even though he figured out too late that he loved her, he couldn't just go on with the way his life was anymore, married to Brenda, seeing Courtney on the side and devoting his entire life to keeping the Corinthos clan happy. He needed to leave to be able to remember Elizabeth and hold on to those good moments they had together. He may be experiencing pain but he had a lot of great memories that he would never give up for anything. As one of the most telling lines of the song states "I could have missed the pain, but I'd have had to miss the dance." And Garth Brooks says in the video, he wouldn't miss it - the dance, his life - for the world...I wanted Jason reach that same moment.
